Universal Pictures released the first trailer for “Shrek 5” on Tuesday, more than a year ahead of the film’s scheduled June 30, 2027, theatrical debut.

Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz return as the voices of Shrek, Donkey and Fiona in the fifth installment of the DreamWorks Animation franchise. Joining them are Zendaya, “Saturday Night Live” cast member Marcello Hernandez and Skyler Gisondo — known for “Superman” and the upcoming “Focker-in-Law” — as Shrek and Fiona’s children, Felicia, Fergus and Farkle.

The trailer opens with a storybook recap of the original 2001 film before Donkey breaks in to declare it’s time for a makeover — an apparent nod to the slightly updated animation style on display. The group journeys through Far, Far Away, encounters a giant and law enforcement, and crosses paths with a sinister snowman styled as a parody of Olaf from “Frozen.” Gingerbread Man also returns, having attached gumdrop buttons to his backside. The trailer closes with the full ensemble — Shrek, Fiona, their children and Donkey — locked in a jail cell as Donkey serenades an irritated Shrek with “Baby Come Back” and “Roxanne.”

“Shrek 5” is the franchise’s first installment in 17 years, following “Shrek Forever After” in 2010. The series has since produced two spinoffs: “Puss in Boots” in 2011 and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” in 2022. The film is directed by Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn, both veterans of the franchise.
